This is third in a series of 50 posts we are putting out throughout the years in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2015. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for the top things YOU love about Minnesota as well!
You may have heard of this parade or seen this parade that runs Thursday through Sunday from November 23 to December 23, 2012 in Downtown Minneapolis along Nicollet Mall. It is quite a spectacular event! Thousand show up each night to enjoy this parade of lights…..but have you ever gotten the chance to be IN the parade?!
My husband, Tom and I had that privilege just this Sunday, December 16. Tom was the great and powerful Wizard of Oz and I was Dorothy, complete with light up ruby red slippers. While it is a treat to watch the parade, being a member of the parade was even more magical. You can see the kids eyes light up as they see the beautifully decorated floats and recognize the characters coming down the street all lit up. Even the parents are shouting the character’s name and everyone is waving and joyous.
Target has been the sponsor of Holidazzle for the last five consecutive years. The parade originally began in 1992. Parade-goers also have a chance to help the local food shelves by bringing non-perishable food and cash donations. Ameriprise Financial will match donations up to $20,000.
How many other cities host a parade 19 times in the month of November and December in frigid weather? I haven’t been able to find any other – and that is one of the 50 things I love about Minnesota – make it fun, make it different and involve lots of great people – illuminating!
