In 1918, on November 11th, the Armistice of Germany went into effect between the Allies of World War I and Germany ending the hostilities of World War I. From them on, the 11th of November was celebrated as Armistice Day, until in 1954, the United States Congress decided to change Armistice to Veterans Day in order to celebrate ALL veterans, not just those who had died in World War I. Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, and is a reminder to celebrate and honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
At Roger Fazendin REALTORS®, Veterans Day means a lot and hits very close to home for some.
Our company’s founder, Roger A. Fazendin was a combat veteran of World War II and a Purple Heart medal recipient. He was on active duty for 3 years and served in both North Africa and Italy as a First Lieutenant in the Army Tank Corps. He planned to join his father in washing machine sales and repair until he was wounded in combat during WWII. Because of the injuries, hauling and moving heavy appliances was out of the question and a residential real estate career was born. In 1965, after successfully selling and managing for years, Roger founded the company that still bears his name.
In addition, Roger’s son Dan C. Fazendin, the current owner, has also served on active duty for 3 years in the United States Army as a Captain. He spent 2 years in Germany and 1 year in Korea. In 1975 he joined as an agent at the company and purchased the company from his father in 1986.
REALTOR® Dick Willis served in the U.S. Army in the construction engineering outfit. His first tour was 2 years from 1957-1959 where he spent time in Colorado, Missouri and the West Coast. In 1961 the Berlin Wall was built and after only 10 months of being married to his wife Sandy, Dick received an unexpected letter that he had 48 hours to report to Ft. Chaffee in Arkansas where he then spent one more year on active duty. After he finished his second tour, Dick went back to school and received his degree. He joined Sandy as an agent at Roger Fazendin REALTORS® in July of 1987.
Director of Business Development, Shelly Halverson also loves to share her father-in-law’s experience as a veteran. Donald Halverson fought in World War II – Army 34th Division Red Bull. He was part of the Italian Campaign – Anzio, Naples, Tom, Po Valley, North Apennines, and Monte Cassino Monastery. Shelly and her husband Tom are very proud of him and thankful for his service to our country. He still, to this day, proudly wears a World War II cap everywhere he goes. Tom was able to take his dad on an Honor Flight – a program where veterans and their chaperone travel to Washington DC to see the WWII Memorial all at no expense to the veterans. It was an amazing experience. The send-off and welcome back was amazing with choirs, bands, color guards and people cheering them on. Don is 92 years young and still very active! He enjoys bowling, dinner at the VFW, ushering at church and taking walks!
REALTOR® Kristin Latuff also shared with us that her brother Bill Lieder is a 20+ year General in the Army National Guard, 34th Infantry Division – “Red Bulls”. His daughter and son-in-law are also in the National Guard. She can only say one thing about what it means to have my family serving our country: there are times in our life when we will do anything to help a friend or family member when the need arises, but Kristin sees the people serving our country as not just helping, but unselfishly sacrificing their entire lives
