Only in Minnesota can you find 1,200 people golfing on a frozen lake and participating in a chili cook-off, when its 16 degrees outside. A lot of folks around the country would call this odd or even ridiculous; we just call this the Wayzata Chilly Open.
The Wayzata Chilly Open celebrated its 30th Anniversary this past weekend on Lake Minnetonka. For 30 years locals have gathered on Wayzata Bay to drive, chip and putt tennis balls down wintery decorated golf courses. Each year they have a theme, this years was The Olympics. Each sponsor then decorates their holes in honor of this theme. We had hole themes of: Jamaican Bobsled Team, Curling, and of course ours, downhill ski run and lodge.
The Wayzata Chilly Open also features the “19th Hole”. The 19th Hole is a giant tent where they host the chili cook-off and live band portion of the event. The chili cook-off features local restaurants from all over the metro creating their chili recipes to try and win the honor of Best Chili. This year’s 19th hole featured restaurants like Psycho Suzi’s, Famous Dave’s, and McCormick’s Pub of Wayzata. The music is always a hit attraction as well. Tim Mahoney was the big musical draw for the Chilly Open this year. Come on, TIM MAHONEY!
Every year Roger Fazendin REALTORS sponsors the event and a hole. We are located at course 1, hole 1 each year. We really took out all the stops this year with a full ski run and lodge featuring our very own Olympic caldron! It was very cool, and a great team event. The pictures you see here are of our hole, and some of the folks that helped us make this year’s design really shine. Thanks to all of their help we received some hardware, again, best hole design! This makes us three time, back to back to back champions! Way to go Faz Team, we couldn’t have done it without your help. We should also mention Catapult Marketing for their great banners; they really made our tent look VERY authentic. And Aspire Beverages for their sports drinks; they helped keep our Olympians hydrated!
Next year we hope to see you out at this awesome event. It may not be the best for the kiddos, but its winter adult fun had by all!
