Although I love being in Minnesota during the summer, it always will be the season for vacations! Teachers and students are off school and many companies change to “summer hours” freeing up Fridays for long weekends. People save up vacation days to take a week off work to spend time with their family doing activities they enjoy.
Every August before school started back up, our family would take a long weekend trip to Michigan. We started the weekend at Warren Sand Dunes, exploring the dunes, laying out, and playing sand volleyball. Then we headed down to New Buffalo for their annual festival including cover bands and tent vendors. Finally, we wrapped up the weekend picking fresh peaches and blueberries for my mom to stock up the freezer for the year. That short little trip is always the highlight of the summer!
We asked our agents and staff to tell us their favorite summer vacation – here’s what they had to say:
“My favorite summer vacation usually involves a lot of relaxation, lots of water and a boat! We really enjoy spending a nice long week on our sailboat on Lake Superior, the week of July 4th. Nothing more relaxing then sailing through the Apostle Islands with Jimmy Buffet playing on the stereo, and a cool beverage in your hand!”
-Beau Bruneau, Relocation Director
“My favorite summer vacation is a stay-cation taking advantage of as much time on Lake Minnetonka and all it has to offer whether it is boating on the lake or driving around the lake in my little red convertible!”

“One of our favorite family vacations was Hoot Owl Resort, close to Itasca Park. We went with 10 other families and took over the resort for a week. Water skiing, hiking, bike riding and the annual trip to Itasca Park where the mouth of the Mississippi River is – you can walk across here. Every night one family would cook dinner for the others – at least 50 people. We moved picnic tables to seat everyone. Only one night of work and eating “out” the rest of the nights. The owners had activities for the young kids every morning and took a boat out for the older ones to ski in the afternoon. The beach was sandy and swimming great. There were kids of all ages so everyone had friends. No TV or cell phones – I read 5 or more books each time we went. We played cards, games, had campfires every night. We could see the Northern Lights and they were amazing. The last day everyone brought their extra food and we cooked it over a fire for breakfast. Sadly, life happens, kids grow up, and everyone seems to have other commitments, we haven’t been able to get everyone together for a few years.”

“My favorite summer vacation destination is Big Sky, Montana. We love the mountains and Big Sky offers plenty of those, but it also has great hiking, fly-fishing, mountain biking, dining and sight-seeing. Big Sky is just 40 miles from Yellowstone National Park and 45 miles from Bozeman, Montana. Hiking is our favorite activity… make sure to hike the Bee Hive Basin trail if you’re ever out there too. And when you’re done, stop at the Lone Peak Brewery and celebrate.”

“I personally enjoy going to my daughter and son-in-law’s cabin on Silver Lake just outside of Battle Lake in between Alexandria and Fergus Falls. It takes 2 ½ hours with one Dairy Queen stop in Albany to arrive at the lake. I find it calming and relaxing as I watch loons, pelicans, eagles and hummingbirds. The first thing I do is get the work done – mow the lawn, trim, get the flags out, set up all the outside furniture, have a glass of wine and decide where to have dinner. There are a number of fun and good food restaurants around the area and making a decision is hard because I like them all. When the water warms up, I like to float on a big blow up chair and have wine or cocktails. I also enjoy boating, kayaking and lying in a comfortable hammock watching the grandchildren play. It’s sad to leave but I look forward to another time. There have been many times I have sold houses on the phone while at the lake. I bring my Ipad and cell phone to communicate with my clients. I’m never too far from real estate. My associates at the office are also a big help in executing documents for me. All in all, summer is fun.”

“I love going to Nissau, MN. Every year my family would stay at the Eagles Nest Resort and the same families would come up the same week. I made lots of friends and had so much fun swimming and fishing. The turtle races were always a highlight and there was a great candy/ice cream store within walking distance.”
