This is 22nd in a series of 50 posts we are putting out throughout the years in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2015. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for the top things YOU love about Minnesota as well!
You hear a lot of jokes about Minnesota Nice but I’m here to tell you, there’s nothing like it…. anywhere!
It’s okay for me to write about Minnesota ‘Nice’ because I’m a California native and moved here 13 years ago… I’m an unbiased outsider. I’ve lived in Northern and Southern CA, Arizona, Maryland and spent a fair share of time traveling all over the US, Europe and Mexico. Don’t get me wrong; these are all beautiful places with friendly people.
One of the first things our Realtor said to us on a house hunting trip here was ‘Minnesotans are nice, really nice’ and he wasn’t kidding. These people are genuinely good, down-to-earth, solid and friendly. Whether it’s the anonymous neighbor who snow plowed our driveway a week after we moved in (February, I might add) or the cheerful welcome of a fresh baked pie, their niceness has no limits. An unlimited supply of holiday meal invitations, since we have no family in town, has never ceased in our years here. And there is nothing better then being ‘adopted’ by a friend’s family and being included in every occasion imaginable.
Whether it’s because most Minnesotans end up coming back to their roots to raise their families and are surrounded by generations of family or the core values they were brought up with, I don’t know. But what I do know is the warmth generated from their Minnesota niceness has kept us comfy, with a sense of belonging, which will keep us here indefinitely. And that’s priceless!
