This is 46th in a series of 50 posts we are putting out throughout the years in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2015. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for the top things YOU love about Minnesota as well!
Have you flown into or out of the Minneapolis/St Paul International Airport? I actually just came back from a trip to Montana, and I have to say we have a great airport here in the Twin Cities. There are so many new restaurants and shops; you could easily get delayed and still have a great layover at our beautiful airport!
MSP airport has been in this location since 1920. This is when the old Snelling Speedway was converted into an airfield, and the first runway was put into place. The first hanger was erected in 1923, which was later purchased by Northwest Airlines in 1926. This is when Northwest won the bid for airmail from the US government. In 1929 Northwest Airlines started it first passenger flights into and out of the Twin Cities.
Things really progressed for the airport after this, especially with the booming economy after World War Two. By the end of the 1960’s we had the official world headquarters of Northwest Orient Airlines, a beautiful new Lindbergh terminal, and a very large maintenance base.
Today we have two beautiful terminals, with all the shops and restaurants a travel could ever want. There are two tram systems to shuttle you from the main ticketing location to the farthest reaches of the airport. Recently METRO Transit added a light rail system that travels from downtown Minneapolis to Bloomington, and stops at each terminal. This addition was a great new connection for people in Minneapolis and St Paul to the airports.
Yes even our airport is spectacular, what’s not to love about Minnesota!
