This is 26th in a series of 50 posts we are putting out throughout the years in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2015. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for the top things YOU love about Minnesota as well!
Ahh, it’s finally time to hit the patios! In Minnesota if you can chip the ice off the seats, it’s patio season. We don’t waste any early, warm spring days in these parts. The patios are packed as soon as it’s sunny and warmer than 60 degrees. And luckily the patios aren’t hard to find. Many of our favorite local restaurants maximize their seating capacity with outdoor seating when weather permits – probably because they know we’ll be there in droves as soon as the weather warms up! Resourceful restaurateurs will transform busy sidewalks into cozy lunch seating, rooftops into happening hot spots, and shaded gardens into romantic evening dinning.
You probably have your favorites that you know you’ll get to this season but this year I’m taking a suggestion from a local professor who puts 20 Patios Not to Miss at the top of his summer “to do”. Among those on my list will be: Psycho Suzi’s in Northeast Minneapolis, Stella’s in Uptown, W.A. Frost’s on Selby in St. Paul for a romantic dinner or weekend lunch, Zelo’s on Nicollet mall for happy hour, Brit’s Pub for rooftop lawn bowling, Butcher and the Boar for sausage and beers, Bayside in Excelsior by boat, McCormick’s in Wayzata, Maynard’s on Lake Minnetonka, Ciao Bella in Edina, kid friendly Jake’s in Plymouth, Cafeteria in Uptown, Sea Salt at Minnehaha Falls, Bread & Pickle and concert at Lake Harriet Band shell, Tin Fish and a walk around Lake Calhoun, It’s Greek to Me courtyard in Minneapolis, Redstone in Minnetonka Eden Prairie or Maple Grove….. the list goes on. Ultimately it doesn’t matter where you go – you can have fun at any patio you can find. It’s all about enjoying the company of good friends and enjoying the Minnesota outdoors!
Maybe it’s a clinical vitamin D deficiency or months of cabin fever, but you’ll see us out in crowds as the weather warms up and the chairs are pulled out of storage. Whether it is a romantic candle lit dinner, a hopping happy hour or something in between, there is a patio nearby just waiting for you – get out and enjoy!!
