This is 28th in a series of 50 posts we are putting out throughout the years in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2015. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for the top things YOU love about Minnesota as well!
One of my favorite things is the ever-changing seasons that we get to experience year after year. As I sit and write this it is early June 2014. We are coming off of an epic arctic type winter where we had over 50 days of below zero weather. I always joke that our cold winters help to keep our mosquitoes in check. That theory has been proven false this year. If anything they are tougher, stronger and looking for revenge!
But back to what I love about Minnesota and it’s changing seasons. About every three months we get to experience something new. Change is refreshing and gives us as Minnesotans something to look forward to.
In the spring I look forward to the first thunderstorm. It’s the time of the year where you can still smell the rain coming. It freshens and cleans all that winter has left behind. Plus it signifies baseball season…and who doesn’t enjoy listening to a Twins victory sitting on the patio during a warm spring night.
Summer in Minnesota is made for the water. The land of 10,000 lakes does not let us down. We all enjoy our lakes and rivers: sailing, fishing, swimming, water skiing, power boating, canoeing, kayaking, we even stand up on surfboards now and paddle. If there is a way to be out on the water, we try it. We even love to end our days just staring as the sun sets on the other side of the lake.
Fall is my favorite. Cooler temperatures and the magnificent fall colors always get us out hiking in the woods somewhere. There is nothing better than a fall day spent enjoying the outdoors and a campfire in the evening with good friends. Plus its sweatshirt weather…those old comfortable shirts start to reappear in your wardrobe.
Winter is spectacular, we enjoy going for a walk during one of the first snows. The flakes quiet the air and create a beautiful silence. Peaceful is the best way to describe it. Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skating, sledding and snowmobiling are just a few of the things we love to do during this time of the year. It really is one of the most beautiful times of the year. So embrace winter…after all, it’s about the only time when the mosquitoes aren’t bad!
