This is 25th in a series of 50 posts we are putting out throughout the years in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2015. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for the top things YOU love about Minnesota as well!
I think the long Minnesota winters really bring Minnesotans a new appreciation for the spring season when it finally begins to roll around. There is always that first day of the season when I leave the office for the evening and I don’t have to walk quite as fast to my car, and as I climb in the car actually feels warm because the sun has been drenching it all day. That’s how I know its spring!
Here are some of my favorite things about Minnesota spring…
I love watching the dirty mounds of snow slowly get smaller from day to day, and the puddles in dips in the road get bigger. The sound of cars and people splashing through puddles is welcoming! The sky seems clearer, cleaner and brighter, and people seem happier. It’s entertaining to see the amount of people wearing shorts or driving with their windows down on that first stretch of 50 degree days, but I don’t blame them – I’m usually doing the same thing. The roads are often so full of bikers, dog-walkers, rollerbladers and joggers pushing their strollers that you’re better off just parking your car and joining them instead of trying to maneuver around them.
As the mounds of snow melt, a lot of items begin to turn up – lost mittens, a newspaper from December, and the GRILL! The top of ours just showed up a week or so ago on our back deck, tucked away under the large drift that had gathered all winter. We had forgotten it was there, but it was immediately shoveled out, brought to the front driveway, and fired up for our first burgers of season. We were a little surprised it still worked, but since then we’ve grilled almost every other night.
And finally, the fishing boat! We have a few more weeks till the ice is out on the lakes, but the anticipation is slowly building for everyone. Whether you enjoy boating, fishing (not in a shack on the ice), swimming, or just seeing the open water once again, the open lakes are truly a favorite sign that spring has arrived.
We’ve had some nice days lately… I hope spring is finally here for good! What are a few of your favorite things about spring in Minnesota?
