There have been many dramatic changes since our founding in 1965, and how we market homes is certainly one of them.
In the beginning, there were few real marketing options. The goal has always been—and still is—to get the attention of the buying public to the fact that a particular home is on the market and available for sale. Four options stood out: The Multiple Listing Service that notified the real estate community about the home, print advertising in the local and metropolitan papers, open houses, and yard signs.
Folks would wait impatiently for the Sunday edition of the Star Tribune to come out and then they would start driving around and calling the listing agents. Enterprising agents also put out flyers on their clients’ properties. This was done mostly through office copy machines and delivering flyers. Agents would also get on their landline telephones and call other agents about the availability of their listings.
It was—and still is—important for agents to have healthy cooperative relationships with agents from other brokerage firms to facilitate information sharing. Like everything else, massive changes have taken place in the process and art of effectively marketing our clients’ properties.
