A home is one of the biggest purchases a person makes in their lifetime. Before beginning your house hunt, there are a number of things to consider: timeline, location, financing, home features, etc. Answering the following questions will give you a good start:
What is my time frame?
Is your move an immediate need or do you have more time to look around? This is also necessary to know when deciding upon a closing date.
How long do I plan to live here?
You likely won’t profit from a real estate investment if you’re in the home for less than 3 years.
In what school district do I want to be?
The greater Twin Cities area has a number of award-winning school districts.
Should I be close to work?
If you are working from home, you may not need to be near an office. If you are in-person, a long commute could be costly and inconvenient.
Do I want to have easy access to trails, parks, shopping, and/or dining?

How much can I afford?
Think about monthly mortgage payments and the downpayment. If you pay less than 20% down, you may need to pay for Private Mortgage Insurance.
What lender do I want to use?
Once you decide what lender you would like to use, you should get pre-approved for a loan as soon as possible.
How much space do I need?
How many bedrooms and bathrooms do you need? Do you want indoor square footage, outdoor acreage, or both?
