This is 42nd in a series of 50 posts we are putting out throughout the years in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2015. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for the top things YOU love about Minnesota as well!
Minnesota has once again been ranked as the second best bike friendly state in the nation (behind Washington) by the League of American Bicyclists! As one who loves bike riding, this wasn’t surprising news. No, I’m not one of those serious bike riders with the expensive street bike, skinny tires, colorful jersey and aerodynamic, space-age helmet but I do enjoy a good ‘ole bike ride with my water bottle in my white basket type of outing! Our destinations usually include lunch somewhere along the way as well!
Minnesota has a plethora of bike trails (www.exploreminnesota.com) to choose from! One of my favorites is the Dakota Rail Regional Trail which starts in Wayzata and goes 30 miles out to New Germany. This was an old railroad track that was painstakingly converted to a bike trail several years ago. The entire ride is fun with beautiful views of lovely homes and pristine lakeshore and woods.
My other favorite is the Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail which runs from Hopkins to the Carver Park Reserve. This trail runs right through Excelsior making for a nice stop for lunch mid-ride and don’t be surprised if you see a turkey or deer running across your path.
There are plenty of trails throughout the state to try so get out there! Let’s shoot for #1 bike friendly state in 2016!
