This is 49th in a series of 50 posts we are putting out throughout the years in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2015. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for the top things YOU love about Minnesota as well!
I can’t believe we have almost finished our series on the 50 Things we love about Minnesota and we haven’t talk about the Mall of America yet! We have the country’s largest indoor mall right in the Minneapolis/St Paul metro, how lucky are we!
The Mall of America, or MOA as we call it, was built in 1992. The cost to build was $650 Million, which would be over $1.1 Billion today. 13,300 tons of steel was used to construct the mall. To give you a size comparison, you can fit 7 Yankee Stadiums inside of the mall. The mall boasts a theme park called Nickelodeon Universe, a 1.2 Million gallon aquarium, a movie theater, Lego Land, and has 40 million visitors every year.
Currently they are doing a $325 Million dollar expansion, which will make it the world’s largest mall once again. The expansion includes a JW Marriot, 150,000 sq ft of exclusive retail, apartments and condos, the new “front door” mall entrance, and much more. The expansion adds some 750,000 sq ft to the mall.
They say that most of the patrons of the mall are from out of town, 6 out of 10 to be exact, but the Holiday shopping season is the time when Minnesotans like to visit. And why not?! They decorate the mall to the 9’s, and you can literally shop for anything and everything in the mall. You can eat, drink and even sleep there now, what’s not to love about this national treasure in our back yard!
