This is 31st in a series of 50 posts we are putting out throughout the years in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2015. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for the top things YOU love about Minnesota as well!
Coming from someone who has grown up and spent most of their city time in downtown Chicago, moving to the Twin Cities area I found that it wasn’t fair to try to compare the two areas. There are a lot of factors that make Chicago and the Twin Cities very different places to live. For instance, that whole “Minnesota Nice” thing they talk about… yes, it’s real. Walk down the streets of Chicago and everyone has their head down and phone out, making every effort to avoid eye contact and heaven forbid, be forced to smile at a stranger. In Minnesota, I’ve found it’s pretty normal to end up striking up a conversation or even throwing a quick smile at a stranger.
One of the biggest differences I’ve found, however, that really makes the Twin Cities stand out to me is how clean it is! It’s not just something that I have noticed apparently. If you research “cleanest cities in the world,” Minneapolis almost always falls somewhere on the lists. Known for our healthy active lifestyles, Minnesotans breathe non-polluted air, walk the many trails and park systems and make efforts to stay healthy and clean. In addition, the Twin Cities area offers plenty of programs to help keep the cities clean, including the Downtown Improvement District – 120 blocks of the city that are maintained by “clean ambassadors” who work to keep the city in shape and clean. It’s not just limited to the Twin Cities either – Duluth is often considered one of the cleanest cities and the state pushes programs that encourage plants to install the latest cleaning systems. Enjoy this clean city and state!
