If there is one thing that we love in Minnesota its claiming what is “ours.” Did you know that Oregon Trail was created in Minnesota? We love to let everyone know what came from, developed out of, or was born here. This is why we have such devotion for Prince, or the artist formally known as Prince, or is it back to Prince again?
Prince was born in Minneapolis Minnesota, in 1958. His parents, though separated for most of his life, were both musically devoted. Prince had musical influence in his life from birth. His mother was a Jazz singer, and his father a lyricist and pianist. He also had a stepfather, but had a rocky road relationship with him which caused him to run away from home. He later would be adopted by a family by the name of Anderson.
Prince was always involved in music, starting up local bands Grand Central and Champagne at a very young age. The latter of the two was moderately successful. Next Prince went on to do solo tracks with a small time local producer, Chris Moon. These demo tracks led him to the big time, being picked up by Warner Brothers Records. His first album had soft sales but fair for a new artist. His following releases would not be so modest, releasing many singles and albums including his prize work Purple Rain!
Today Prince is still releases great music, and does so with more posh and pizzazz than anyone else in the industry. He calls Minnesota home with a home and studio in the southwest part of the Minneapolis metro, but spends most of his time in California. He really hasn’t lived in Minnesota for many years, but if you bring up Prince to any true Minnesotan they will tell you, “You know he’s from here, right?”
