This is 19th in a series of 50 posts we are putting out throughout the years in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2015. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for the top things YOU love about Minnesota as well!
What I love about Minnesota is traveling to the Iron Range in the late summer/early fall. Small town after small town abound, each with at least one or more lakes they call their own. The Scandinavian culture is woven into the fabric of everyday existence as family cabins seem to all be equipped with ancient saunas near the shore. What I love most is spending a day on the lake followed by dinner with family and neighbors on the deck. This most always is followed by a late night sauna where your skin gets so hot you’re forced to make a dash to the lake for a cooling dip. At around 10 PM a huge beach ball-sized moon begins to rise in the sky illuminating a golden path across the lake. The loons sound their haunting call as we gaze skyward and count the continuous trail of satellites as they cross paths with the stars. There is just nothing quite like the experience. This is ‘True Minnesota’ to me and one of the things that I love most.
