This is 21st in a series of 50 posts we are putting out throughout the years in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2015. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for the top things YOU love about Minnesota as well!
Now I know this may seem a bit odd to write about, but ask any true blood Minnesotan about the Minnesota goodbye and you get the same response, “Ohhh Yeahhh the long Minnesota goodbye.” We lost the “you betcha” many years ago, but this can still be heard in Canada I think.
Because it’s the holiday season, this topic is top of mind. Just yesterday we celebrated Christmas with my Mom’s side of the family. We all head over to my Aunt’s home in Coon Rapids for a potluck Christmas celebration. Everyone participates in chit-chatty conversations throughout the afternoon, socializing at its best really. Then it happens. Someone says, “Well we better get going.” Here starts the long goodbye! Yesterday it literally took us 20 minutes to leave from the first goodbye to the last!
Some folks will tell you they hate the long goodbye, most of these folks are not from around here. The others are usually younger and don’t understand the importance of slowing down, getting your last two cents in, sitting down one more time, passing out the leftovers, warming up the car and then saying goodbye again. What’s not to understand about this?
Who knows why this process was established. My best guess is because of the cold Minnesota winters. You know you want to let that car warm up a good 15 minutes before venturing out!
