This is fifth in a series of 50 posts we are putting out throughout the years in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2015. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for the top things YOU love about Minnesota as well!
First of all there are not a lot of things to do in the frigid cold winters in Minnesota, why not go fishing? With the ice houses we have readily available now, you can be out in -10° weather and be sitting in jeans and a sweatshirt in your ice house. Ice fishing gets you out of the house and helps you shake off those winter doldrums!
I also think there is great sport in winter fishing. The fish are cold and lethargic, so it becomes a challenge to entice them to bite. Now-a-days there are a lot of gizmos and gadgets to help you with this, but some of the best luck comes with the right spot, a pole, a hook and a minnow.
My favorite part of ice fishing is the time spent with friends. These fishing trips tend to be in close quarters with a lack of technology; this is a time to have good conversations with old friends and a great chance to make new ones. I think many people feel this same way about hunting, but my food of choice is found under 2 feet of frozen Minnesota Ice!
